It was a Davis Cup debut for Great Britain against Israel that launched Andy Murray on the way to domestic tennis prominence culminating in a Wimbledon tour de force in 2005.

Now fellow Scot Colin Fleming, formerly with Edinburgh's Blackhall club, is hoping to do things in reverse with acceptance for the Wimbledon men's doubles later this month the ideal springboard for winning Davis Cup honours, coincidentally against the Israelis, at Eastbourne later in the summer.

For the exciting aspect of the wild card granted Fleming, 21, and partner Jamie Murray, 20 - Andy's older brother - is that it comes when a gap exists for a new British combination to put down a marker.

"Possibilities such as playing Davis Cup and even qualifying for the US Open are, of course, in the back of my mind," admits Linlithgow-born Fleming as the news of his invitation on to the global stage sinks in before he quickly adds: "But I just cannot afford to think too far ahead meantime.

"Playing Wimbledon is not just the realisation of this season's tennis goal, rather it is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.

"The first time any tennis player picks up a racket the idea of reaching Wimbledon springs to mind.

"Now I am almost there and the feeling is extra rewarding because, as a junior, I missed out on the under-18 singles event," says Fleming.
